With so many mutual friends, a festive family, and two A typers, we knew that we wanted plenty of time to plan a huge party, so we had a long engagement of a year and a half. As we started to contact more and more venues on the east coast, it became clear that we wanted to create an experience instead of a one day wedding. We wanted to have our ceremony and reception in the same place which we felt was key for our guests to relax and enjoy themselves. We ended up finding the perfect venue for us in the Dominican Republic – one that was rustic, beachy, beautiful and intimate.
The inspiration for our wedding was centered around the beauty of the peacock. Teal, gold and ivory were central colors in the decor. Our invites featured a teal and gold foiled peacock which for our guests, really set the tone of what to expect for our wedding. We wanted to take advantage of the natural beauty of the Dominican Republic and used the beach as a the backdrop for the ceremony which included a circle arch full of white hydrangeas, roses and baby’s-breath. Our vision was rustic yet with a touch of glamour. When our guests walked into the reception there were round tables with teal table cloths, and lots of white flowers and rustic lanterns. Our two family tables had hanging lanterns over the long tables with white orchids and roses along the length. The cake was a three tiered marble cake with nutella filling. The bottom layer was teal watercolor and then the middle was painted gold peacock feathers. Everything tied back to our theme nicely!
We love our three dogs and made sure that they were included somehow. We created a custom cocktail menu with special Peruvian drinks named after each of them. The guests loved ordering these signature drinks! Another opportunity to show our guests how much we loved them was to create a seating chart that had an individual black and white photo of each of our guests. The table number was on the back of the photo and our guests were overjoyed to see the time we took to create something unique to show off their personalities! We started the reception off with “la hora loca” a one hour non stop dance party. It really kicked off the night and we didn’t stop partying until 2:30 AM! The best night ever!
For couples planning a destination wedding, it was critical for us to really create an experience for our guests to make the trip worthwhile. We created a 4 day itinerary for them and sent out newsletters with important details before the wedding to get them excited about the big day. A few weeks before the wedding we created a spotify playlist to get everyone hype! We made it as easy as possible for our guests to book their hotel and transportation. We would recommend setting up a facebook group so that your guests can start getting to know each other and you can post friendly reminders and fun updates. The more excitement you can create, the happier your guests will feel to make that big ticket purchase to attend your wedding in another country far from home.
