Everything You Need to Know Before Wedding Dress Shopping

Congrats, bride-to-be (and future Kleinfeld bride)!

You’re engaged and it’s finally time to begin wedding planning. While exciting, the process may also seem daunting. As always, we’ve got you covered.
Before you book your bridal appointment and step into a showroom to start wedding dress shopping, it’s important to recognize the importance of proper research. We’re here to explain the essential steps, proper timeline, helpful resources, as well as our team’s best tips, so you’re well equipped to find the perfect dress.

Timeline

First and foremost, understanding and following the industry-recommended timeline is one of the most essential steps in selecting your wedding dress.
As a general rule of thumb, it is best to order your gown about 9–12 months prior to your wedding day. Some designers require more time, and customizations can extend production timelines. Allowing enough time helps you avoid limited selection, rush fees, and unnecessary stress.
Here is our team’s suggested timeline:

18–12 Months Prior: Connect with your personal style. Consider how you want to look and feel on your wedding day. Gather inspiration, establish your budget, and book 1–2 bridal appointments.
9–12 Months Prior: Say “yes!” to your dress and place your order. Trust your instincts and celebrate.
6–8 Months Prior: Finalize plans for alterations and gown preservation. Confirm your seamstress or service, even if appointments are scheduled later.
4–6 Months Prior: Schedule your accessory appointment and finalize your veil, jewelry, shoes, and accessories.
2–3 Months Prior: Complete alterations. Expect 2–4 fittings, with your final fitting typically 1–2 weeks before your wedding.

Research & Discover Your Bridal Style

Before rushing into a bridal salon, take time to discover your personal style. Doing this ahead of time makes the shopping experience more focused and enjoyable.
If you’re unsure about designers, fabrics, silhouettes, or necklines, that’s completely fine—your stylist will guide you. Your role is to understand your personal style and how you want to feel.
Think about whether you envision a classic and minimalist look, something glamorous, or a more bohemian and romantic aesthetic. Having a general vision helps guide your appointment and keeps you focused.
Helpful resources include social media platforms, bridal publications, and browsing collections online. Just be mindful not to overwhelm yourself with too much content.

Consider Your Wedding Theme & Formality

While choosing a dress that feels like the best version of yourself is most important, your wedding’s theme and formality can help guide your decision.
Popular wedding themes include classic, garden party, modern, celestial, romantic, industrial, dark and moody, cottagecore, and maximalist.
Formalities can range from casual and cocktail to black-tie or white-tie.
Your venue, season, décor, and overall aesthetic can all help shape your vision.

Establish a Budget

Before stepping into any showroom, establish a clear budget. This allows your consultant to guide you toward realistic options and prevents falling in love with a gown outside your range.
Consider the following:

  • Dress cost (including tax)
  • Alterations
  • Accessories (veil, jewelry, shoes, headpieces)
  • Gown preservation

Select a Bridal Salon & Experience

Once you’ve defined your vision and budget, choose 1–2 bridal salons that align with your needs. Thoughtful research helps avoid unnecessary appointments and can even save money, as many salons charge appointment fees.
Other factors to consider:

  • Size of the gown selection
  • Appointment duration
  • Reputation and reviews
  • Level of privacy
  • Policies and fees
  • Trunk show opportunities

Many salons offer different appointment types, allowing you to select the experience that best fits your preferences.

Book Your Appointment

Once your research is complete, schedule your bridal appointment. Most salons require appointments, so booking in advance is essential.
Appointments can typically be scheduled online, by phone, or via email. Whether you choose a standard or VIP experience, securing your time is key.

Prepare for Your Bridal Appointment

As your appointment approaches, here are key tips to keep in mind:

Gather Your Inspiration: Bring a small collection of images or ideas to share with your stylist.
Who and What to Bring: Bring supportive guests who uplift you. Most salons limit guest count, so choose wisely. The only required item is undergarments for sanitation purposes—everything else is optional.
Shapewear, strapless bras, or shoes can be helpful but are not required. Many gowns provide built-in structure and support.
It’s often easiest to try on gowns barefoot or in socks, but you may bring heels if it helps you visualize your look.

Look and Feel Your Best: Start your day in a way that makes you feel confident and relaxed. Whether that’s a workout, quiet time, or getting ready, prioritize yourself.
Be well-rested, hydrated, and fueled so you can fully enjoy the experience. Wear something you feel good in—especially if you plan to take photos.

Say “Yes!”

Finally, your preparation will lead you to this moment. When you find the gown that feels right, trust your instinct, say “yes,” and celebrate with your loved ones.
